What is geotechnical engineering?

Geotechnical Engineering is the exploration and analysis of substrate materials in-situ, with a focus on soils and geological structures, for the purpose of analyzing deep foundation systems, soil improvement methodologies, shallow foundation systems, forensic investigations of various types of soil-related failures and more.

SOCOTEC is proud to offer our clients geotechnical and geophysical engineering solutions for all phases of the built environment. Our team of experts, with over 150 years of industry experience, are proficient in subsurface exploration analysis and geotechnical engineering solutions. With our in-house laboratory, our professionals are able to showcase a wide-array of capabilities ranging from an initial site investigation all the way through the final design phase.

Geotechnical Engineering

Our explorations focus on soils and geologic structures, as well as their ability to adequately and safely provide support within the built environment. Our geotechnical experience ranges from comprehensive large-scale mixed-use development projects including various site structures to individual environmental studies, focused on contaminated site evaluation and remediation.  Our team of experts also provide engineering expertise with deep foundation systems, soil improvement methodologies, shallow foundation systems, forensic investigations of various types of soil-related failures and more:

  • Pile Driveability and Capacity Analysis
  • Bearing Capacity Analysis
  • Expert Witness Support
  • On-site testing and Monitoring
  • Seismic Monitoring
  • Sinkhole Risk Analysis
  • Excavation, Shoring and Dewatering Analysis

Surveys

SOCOTEC also specializes in Geotechnical Surveys, where we provide our clients with a cost-effective approach to site conditions in all phases of the site development process. Our team utilizes a multitude of methods for this analysis while relying on our drilling crews to perform subsurface sampling and drilling. SOCOTEC currently utilizes two drilling rigs, a four-wheel truck-mounted Diedrich D-50 drill rig, and a mini-mounted Diedrich D-25 Drill rig.

The Diedrich D-50 drill is tooled with an auto hammer, Its capabilities include:

  • Asphalt or concrete pavement coring
  • Wet rotary Standard Penetration Test (SPT) soil borings
  • Solid stem auger borings or hollow stem auger borings
  • Environmental monitoring wells

The Diedrich D-25 drill is tooled with a safety hammer. Its capabilities include:

  • Wet rotary SPT soil borings
  • Solid stem auger borings
  • Ideal for limited access areas (as low as 3-feet access to desired sampling locations)

SOCOTEC has also completed soil borings in rough terrain conditions, from elevated boardwalks, and over bodies of water from specialized drill rigs. At SOCOTEC, we take great pride in providing innovative solutions to deliver our clients with requested soil data, regardless of the challenging conditions.

Environmental

SOCOTEC provides a full range of environmental services related to the assessment of site contamination. We also provide environmental engineering services during site remediation starting with the recommendations through obtaining a no-further-action designation from the applicable government agency.

  • Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (Evaluate Potential)
  • Phase II Environmental Site Assessment (Evaluate Existence)

SOCOTEC provides these services with fully trained and licensed personnel and engineers. We will furnish and submit the necessary reports as requested.
