The Challenge
Building a 205‑Foot Silo Around a Protected Mockingbird Nest
The Clinton Terminal project included slip-form placement of a 205-foot-high concrete silo. The silo portion of the project required construction teams to work continuously, 24 hours a day over 11 days, to complete the concrete placement.
During construction, a Mockingbird nest (the State Bird of Texas) was discovered on the stairwell leading up the side of the silo. In accordance with State law, the nest could not be removed or disturbed. The contractor protected the nest, allowing it to remain in place throughout construction.
This unique challenge highlighted the team’s ability to deliver a complex, continuous concrete operation while fully preserving the protected nest and its precious contents.
