The Challenge
Replacing a Critical Bridge in New York
The Mario M. Cuomo Bridge project represented a landmark moment in bridge construction and transportation infrastructure in New York. Designed to replace the aging Tappan Zee Bridge, the project involved constructing two new 3.1-mile cable-stayed bridges crossing the Hudson River between Westchester and Rockland Counties.
At the time, this $3.9 billion initiative was New York State’s largest design-build project and one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in North America. The scale, visibility, and complexity of the project demanded rigorous quality control, precise coordination, and continuous oversight throughout construction.
With activities taking place both on site and across fabrication and production facilities nationwide, the Owner’s Engineer team needed a trusted construction materials testing and inspection expert capable of ensuring compliance, consistency, and performance at every stage of delivery.
