The Challenge
Improving Nuclear Pump Impeller Performance
Pumps are critical components in nuclear facilities, where reliable hydraulic performance is essential to the operation of plant systems. Their performance depends on several factors, including impeller geometry, fluid flow behavior, pressure distribution, and overall efficiency.
For this project, the objective was to evaluate pump performance following the introduction of newly designed impellers. The new components were developed using surface scans of the existing impellers, providing an accurate representation of their original geometry. Modifications were then incorporated into the designs to address identified impeller issues.
The challenge was to evaluate that performance with confidence, and to identify any risk, such as cavitation, before the impellers went into service.

The Solution
CFD Numerical Simulation with ANSYS
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used in nuclear power plants to design, analyze and validate critical pump impellers. SOCOTEC applied this approach using ANSYS to model the pumps with their new impellers.
Our work included:
- 3D CFD modeling of the pumps fitted with the new impellers, based on the scanned and modified geometry
- Head rise calculation across each pump component
- Pump efficiency assessment to evaluate the performance of the redesigned configuration
- Velocity streamline analysis, examining fluid flow patterns and identifying potential cavitation regions (highlighted in red in the simulation results)
- Pressure distribution analysis throughout the pump to better understand its hydraulic behavior

The Results
Simulation Correlated with Measured Performance
The simulation results correlated well with measured data after installation, confirming the reliability of the CFD model.
For the client, this means:
- Performance evaluated before commitment: the behavior of the new impellers was understood component by component
- Clear visibility on risk: potential cavitation regions were identified through pressure distribution analysis
- Validated results: the model was checked against real measurements once the impellers were installed
For the nuclear sector, this project shows how CFD numerical simulation can support the design and validation of critical pump components, helping operators make informed decisions on equipment modifications.
SOCOTEC combines advanced 3D CFD simulation with nuclear sector knowledge to help operators evaluate, validate and improve critical equipment.
