The Challenge 

Supporting a Critical Turnpike Bridge Replacement

Bridge EB-311 was replaced as part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s Total Reconstruction Initiative, which is improving infrastructure along the Turnpike Mainline.

Located in Lower Swatara Township, the bridge carries SR 441 (North Union Street) over the Pennsylvania Turnpike and serves approximately 9,000 vehicles daily.

The existing structure needed to be replaced with a bridge that could provide better horizontal and vertical clearance while supporting the complete reconstruction of the Mainline corridor in this area.

The project also required a detailed understanding of subsurface conditions before foundation and pavement decisions could be finalized. Site-specific information was therefore essential to developing appropriate recommendations for the new structure and surrounding infrastructure.

Effective coordination was another important consideration as the project moved from design into construction. Engineering questions and submittals needed to be addressed efficiently to maintain progress on this active transportation project.
