Protecting Lives and Advancing Sustainability with Building Envelope
In cities defined by their skylines, it’s easy to admire the grandeur of buildings without considering what keeps them standing strong—and safe. At SOCOTEC USA, we know that true innovation doesn’t end at the design table. It lives in the details, thrives in collaboration, and endures through proactive expertise.
In this episode of our Trust & Tech series, Dan Popadynec, Senior Principal & Director – New Construction Facades at SOCOTEC USA, shares his perspective on building facades, life safety, and what it truly means to be trusted advisors in the built environment.

The Building as a Living System
"If I were to explain what I do to somebody who's not in our field,” says Dan Popadynec, “I am like a building dermatologist—or a plastic surgeon.”
It’s an analogy that turns heads but speaks volumes. Dan specializes in building facades—the external envelope that protects a structure from weather, wear, and time. Roofs, waterproofing, and cladding: these aren’t just aesthetic elements; they are systems that regulate energy, manage moisture, and safeguard people. In essence, they are the first line of defense—and a vital component of life safety.
SOCOTEC’s role in consulting goes far beyond problem-solving. We operate as a critical extension of every project team, ensuring that performance, protection, and vision are fully aligned.
Trust in that collaborative process is non-negotiable. Our clients come to us because they want their buildings to perform—not just functionally, but beautifully. And when the architect’s vision collides with engineering complexity, it takes seasoned experts to reconcile both worlds. That’s where SOCOTEC thrives: at the intersection of innovation and dependability.

The Future of Facades
From Protection to Power
Looking ahead, the role of facades is set to evolve dramatically. As cities pivot toward sustainability and climate resilience, building envelopes will be expected to do much more.
The facade is becoming more and more an active component in how buildings interact with the environment. “Our buildings need to produce their own energy,” Dan says. “The facade is going to be a key player in that transformation.”
This vision aligns with a broader trend toward electrification of the grid and energy self-sufficiency. The facades of tomorrow won’t just shield buildings—they’ll generate solar power, manage temperature through smart materials, and help entire cities reduce their carbon footprint.
At SOCOTEC, our experts are already shaping this future. Through innovative design consultation, performance testing, technical foresight, and quality assurance during construction, we guide clients through the complexities of modern building demands—ensuring their projects are not only code-compliant, but future-ready.

Legacy Projects that Define a Career
Over the past two decades, Dan Popadynec has led facade consulting on more than 100 major projects across New York City—including work on over half of the city’s tallest towers. But one project continues to stand out: the Yankee Stadium.
Dan Popadynec was the facade consultant that helped design and execute the stadium’s building envelope, including the iconic 40-meter-long gold-lettered sign that welcomes fans from around the world. Prefabricated in two massive panels, the sign glistens above the entrance as a symbol of both tradition and technical brilliance.
The stadium project showcases what SOCOTEC delivers best: expert consulting rooted in practicality and vision. It wasn’t just about constructing a facade—it was about honoring a legacy, meeting engineering challenges head-on, and creating something that would last for generations.
SOCOTEC’s People-First Approach to Building Consulting
As cities grow taller and smarter, and as expectations for buildings evolve, the need for expert, trustworthy facade consulting is more urgent than ever. Our strength as a company lies not only in our technical expertise, but in our approach to collaboration. We believe buildings are ultimately for people—those who design them, those who construct them, and those who live and work within them.
That belief informs every facet of our work. At SOCOTEC, consulting is never just about solving problems—it’s about building relationships, enabling vision, and protecting lives. Our team-centric, proactive methodology reflects a holistic understanding of the built environment, where every facade contributes to structural integrity, visual harmony, and public safety.
In many ways, we're the caretakers of a social trust, the trust that you can walk in your cities below our buildings and nothing will fall down and hurt you. This, for me, represents a key part of the business: life safety.
