The Challenge

Supporting the Reconstruction of an Iconic New York Landmark

The reconstruction of the World Trade Center complex in New York City involved several major buildings and infrastructure components within one of the city’s most significant redevelopment programs.

Advance Testing held a dedicated contract with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to support the project through inspection and testing services.

The work included One World Trade Center, also known as Freedom Tower, which rises to a symbolic height of 1,776 feet in reference to the year of the United States Declaration of Independence.

Advance Testing also supported work associated with several key structures within the complex, including:

  • World Trade Center Memorial
  • Vehicle Security Center (VSC)
  • Transportation Hub PATH Station, known as the Oculus

The scale of the redevelopment required technical expertise across multiple construction materials and disciplines, with inspection and testing activities supporting different elements of the complex throughout construction.

The Solution

Applying Multidisciplinary Testing Expertise

  • Concrete Testing & Inspection
  • Masonry & Grout Testing

In addition to Advance Testing’s inspection and testing services, SOCOTEC also provided building envelope and energy consulting services for One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

These services provided technical support across multiple stages of construction and several different facilities within the redevelopment.

The project also built on Advance Testing’s longstanding experience with the Port Authority. Since 1996, Advance Testing has held contracts with the agency covering a wide range of services, including soil testing, Portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete inspection and testing, masonry inspection, reinforcing steel inspection, precast concrete plant inspection, structural steel and welding inspection, core drilling, pavement smoothness testing, document control support, and laboratory support services.

This experience provided a strong technical foundation for supporting complex building and infrastructure work throughout the New York region.
